A Week of Last Band Events

This past week, Sam participated in his last events with the Tennessee High School Mighty Viking Band. Their annual spring concert was Tuesday evening. The kids performed especially well. I recorded three of the songs before my phone ran out of memory. I was going to upload them to youtube and include them in this post until I noticed that another band parent uploaded the entire concert in 2 parts. So, below are the videos of the concert for your enjoyment.

Last night, the band had their annual band banquet at the Foundation Event Facility. I had never been there and did not know what to expect. To my pleasant surprise, it was an elegant venue and the perfect place for Sam’s last band banquet. To start off the evening, Sam said the invocation. As sacrilegious as it may be, I recorded his brief prayer.

Last night I took the opportunity to get pictures of Sam with his band director and one of the assistant directors. In the first picture, Sam is standing with Mr. Semones, the band director at Tennessee High School. Before this year, Mr. Semones was the band director at Vance Middle School and the assistant band director at THS. When the band director of the past three years suddenly quit to go to a rival school last summer, Mr. Semones was chosen by the school administration to take his place. The students and parents were all very grateful for this decision. With his zeal, attention to detail, and genuine compassion for the students, Mr. Semones led the Mighty Viking Band to new heights this year, and I am so glad Sam had the privilege to sit under his direction.

In the second picture, Sam is standing with Mrs. Richmond, the elementary band director for Bristol TN City Schools and assistant band director at THS. She is the one who introduced Sam to band in the 6th grade, and she remains his favorite band director. Sam started out on trumpet, with Mrs. Richmond as his private instructor. Even after he switched to tuba, she was always there for encouragement and support. We are both very grateful for the impact she has had on Sam, mostly musically, but also in character development.

Although the band will perform one more time this year, Sam will not be participating. Their last performance will be at Class Night next Friday, and Sam will be with the Seniors rather than with the band. It will definitely be a bittersweet evening.
